K&N Introduces Typhoon® Intake System For The Exciting Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VIII

RIVERSIDE, CA - Sport-compact connoisseurs are blown away by the new Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VIII. Known simply as the "Evo," the car was introduced to foreign markets in 1989 as a lightweight, compact 4-door sedan. Its turbocharged engine and high-tech all-wheel-drive system helped the Evo achieve World Rally Championship glory, winning the series in 1998. Over the years, the Lancer Evolution has received many refinements.

The eighth-generation Evo was introduced to the North American market early in 2003 and out-of-the-box stock, the car's turbocharged 2.0-liter engine produces 271 horsepower at 6,500 rpm and 273 lb-ft of torque at 3,500 revs. K&N Engineering adds even more excitement thanks to a new Typhoon® short-ram-style intake system (PN# 69-6543) for the 2003, 2004 and 2005 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution with the 2.0 liter engine. Unveiled at the 2003 International Auto Salon, K&N's Evo VIII system has the fine features performance fans have come to know and covet in the Typhoon® induction line. By replacing the restrictive OE air box and tract, the Evo short-ram-style Typhoon® unleashes power by feeding a greater volume of cooler, denser air to the twin-scroll turbocharger. Testing on K&N's in-house Twin 248 Dynojet AWD dynamometer shows an average gain of 14 horsepower at the Evo's wheels.

Like the rest of K&N's Typhoon® Intake Systems, the Evo kit uses free-flowing, mandrel-bent, 6061 aluminum induction tubing, available in four finishes (polished and red, blue and silver powdercoat). The kit's mounting brackets are powdercoated black, and its no-drilling installation uses stainless-steel hardware. Even the induction tube's clamps are stainless, so they resist corrosion while supplying the necessary clamping force. To help absorb engine vibration, couplings are made of high-quality, silicone hose, which remains flexible under extreme temperatures. Further, the Evo VIII Typhoon® system's mass-airflow adapter plate is made from that sensor's same Grivory (glass-reinforced nylon) material for a factory look.

All K&N Typhoon Intake Kits begin with the company's famous FilterCharger® air filter. Made of multiple layers of oil-impregnated cotton sandwiched between epoxy-coated aluminum wire mesh, this conical filter can be cleaned and re-oiled with a K&N Recharger Kit (sold separately) for years of use. K&N caps the Evo FilterCharger® with a carbon-fiber top. This system also boasts a carbon-fiber heat shield (crafted in K&N's in-house advanced composites shop), which mounts directly to the Evo's air scoop, and prevents ingestion of heated air from the turbo manifold. K&N's Typhoon intake system for the Evo VIII is covered under CARB EO# D-269-27.

Rated at 238 HP in the 6-speed version of the RX-8, the Renesis engine comes from the factory with untapped power potential. K&N engineers discovered this while designing a short-ram-style Typhoon® air intake system for Mazda RX-8 Part 69-6030-1TFK. On K&N's Dynojet 248 dynamometer, the Mazda RX-8 air intake produced an estimated 10 additional horsepower at the drive wheels.

Performance enthusiasts will be blown away by the K&N Typhoons Kit's looks as well as its performance. For starters, the system's intake tube is made of free-flowing, mandrel-bent 6061 aluminum. The system's billet aluminum mass-air sensor adapter is fully TIG welded to the intake tube prior to finishing.

Air enters K&N's Mazda RX-8 performance air intake through a tapered round K&N air filter. This air filter features a high-tech, carbon-fiber cap and single velocity-stack base from K&N's in-house advanced-composites shop as well as a pleated filtration area made of oil-impregnated cotton-gauze sandwiched between epoxy-coated aluminum wire mesh. The air filter can be cleaned and re-oiled repeatedly with a K&N Recharger Kit for a lifetime of performance.

Other features that set K&N's air intake for Mazda RX-8 models apart include its high-temperature, multi-ply DuPont® Nomex®-reinforced silicone hose couplings with stainless-steel barrel clamps. K&N Filter Care Service Kit For a Million Miles of K&N Performance

RIVERSIDE, CA – K&N Engineering launched the performance-air filtration aftermarket in the 1960s. Since then, automotive-performance enthusiasts worldwide have made the K&N Filter their first upgrade on every vehicle and powersports machine they own. Not only does K&N's legendary FilterCharger® allow more air to enter the intake system and give measurable increases in horsepower, unlike disposable filters, K&N Filters provide outstanding filtration for the life of a vehicle (in most cases).

K&N FilterChargers® use a specially formulated oil to attract and suspend dirt to the cotton-gauze filtration surface. Over time, dirt accumulates on the filter and airflow can be reduced. This is where the K&N Recharger® Kit comes to the rescue. Included are a cleaning solution and dirt-attracting oil, both of which are formulated specifically for K&N's cotton-gauze filter media.

Using the K&N cleaning kit is surprisingly easy and involves just seven simple steps: 1) Pre-cleaning with a soft brush to dislodge loose dirt, 2) Spraying on the cleaning solution and allowing it to soak in for 10 minutes, 3) Rinsing with low-pressure water from the clean side to the dirty side, 4) Shaking out excess water and allowing the filter to dry naturally, 5) Lightly oiling each filter pleat and allowing the oil to impregnate the gauze, 6) Allow to set for 20 minutes, 7) Checking and re-oiling the light spots and finally reinstalling the filter. Typical filter-service interval is about 30,000 to 50,000 miles, depending on conditions (more often in dusty or off-road environments).

Two K&N Filter Care Service Kits are offered. Both include a 12-ounce bottle of Cleaning solution, but Oil packaging varies. Choose from the 8-ounce Squeeze Oil version (Part #99-5050) or 6.5-ounce aerosol Spray Oil (Part #99-5000).

K&N Introduces Innovative Fuel Injector Nozzle Air Filters

RIVERSIDE, CA – Many racers overlook the fact that air not only enters the engine through the air intake system, but also through the fuel injector nozzles. These injector nozzles have aeration holes that help atomize the fuel as it is injected into the engine. These holes can also be paths for fine grit to find its way into the cylinders. The aeration holes can also become plugged with dirt, which alters the fuel mixture and can result in a significant power loss.

K&N has a solution to this potential problem with its Fuel Injection Line Air Filters. The 1-1/4" OD x 1-1/16" tall filters simply slip over the injector nozzle and protect the aeration hole from dust and debris. Available under K&N Part # E-3003, these mini filters fit securely over all 1/4"- to 1/2"-diameter injector nozzles. Each Injector Filter is sold individually and is packaged with a pouch of specially formulated filter oil. Like all K&N cotton-gauze/wire-mesh filters, they can be cleaned and re-oiled with a K&N recharger kit (sold separately).

K&N Introduces Typhoon® Intake Systems For The Infiniti® G35 Coupe And Sedan

RIVERSIDE, CA – Like their Nissan® 350Z sibling, Infiniti® G35s turn heads every time they're out of their garages. Now K&N Engineering snaps G35 owners' heads farther back into the cars' headrests with its new Typhoon® intake systems. Dyno-testing on K&N's in-house Dynojet 248 revealed average drive-wheel gains of 9 HP for the G35 coupe Typhoon® (Part # 69-7080-1TS) and 4-5 HP for the sedan system (Part # 69-7081-1TS).

Although configured differently, both G35 kits combine aluminum intake tubing with a K&N FilterCharger® filter. Mandrel-bent 6061 aluminum provides maximum airflow, and this tubing is finished in the customer's choice of a polished surface and dual-stage powdercoated red, blue and silver. Air enters the Typhoon® systems through tapered round K&N FilterChargers®. These filters feature a single velocity-stack base, a black urethane cap and a filtration area made of oil-impregnated cotton-gauze over epoxy-coated aluminum wire mesh. FilterChargers® can be cleaned and re-oiled repeatedly with a K&N cleaning kit (sold separately). K&N Typhoon hose couplings are high-quality, multi-ply DuPont® Nomex®-reinforced silicone to withstand heat and vibration. All mounting hardware is stainless steel, including the barrel clamps that secure the silicone hose.

The G35 sedan Typhoon® is a short-ram style system that attaches to the engine's mass air sensor. For the G35 coupe kit, K&N devised a complete cold air system that draws air from behind the front fascia. This kit's intake tubing includes an aluminum mass-air sensor adapter that's completely TIG-welded. Because the filter is positioned low in the engine compartment, the G35 coupe Typhoon® includes a DryCharger® wrap for protection from small amounts of water and debris. This silicon-impregnated vinyl material repels water to keep it from entering the intake tract. In extremely wet conditions, the G35 coupe Typhoon® kit can easily be converted from the cold-air configuration to a short-ram style by mounting the filter directly to the inlet tube.
