K&N Products Well-Received At The Industry-Only China Auto Salon In Shanghai

In a very brief period of time, China has become the largest new vehicle market in the world. It first took the lead position in 2009 when it experienced a 46-percent growth over the previous year, and then another 32 percent growth in 2010. While annual increases have recently slowed to single digits, sales are still climbing.

Car shoppers in China can choose from imported cars, vehicles built under a joint venture agreement such as Ford, Toyota, Mazda, and GM, and indigenous manufacturers like Geely Automotive, FAW Group, and Dongfang Motor Company.

K&N Engineering has been an active participant in the growing aftermarket that trails these record-setting vehicle sales; the company has attended the China Auto Salon in Shanghai, the preeminent aftermarket event in the country as a member of the SEMA delegation. And like the SEMA Show, the China Auto salon is not open to the public – just exhibitors, buyers, and the motoring media.

According to David Hill, Sales Manager for K&N, “This is our first year with our own dedicated booth, but we have previously attended as part of the SEMA delegation in 2016.”

Last year, K&N utilized the China Auto Salon as an opportunity to meet with some of the key distributors in the country. For 2017, K&N stepped-up its presence with the addition of a sizeable booth at the show. This allowed the company to meet with a larger number of buyers in various distribution channels.

Hill was pleased with the results from the show and K&N’s growth opportunities in the market. “We received a very positive reaction to K&N products. Car tuning in China is a relatively new phenomenon there, but they are very enthusiastic about it. K&N is established in the market, but we are looking to rapidly expand the brand's presence in the market, hence the reason for the booth.”

And what was displayed in the booth? “We presented all the products, but the focus was air filter elements and cabin filters,” the David explained.

China has a mixed bag when it comes to the range of vehicles available – imported, joint venture, and Chinese-developed. How is K&N addressing this market? “We are currently offering a wide range of products for imported cars and locally-manufactured international brands, but also for some domestic Chinese brands as well,” Hill explained.

“K&N is currently working on a busy development schedule to increase our range for China, with at least 40 new filters currently being worked on, with 20-25 new parts numbers due for release this year,” he added.

“We were really excited to attend this year’s China Auto Salon and look forward to returning next year. The enthusiasm for K&N was really great to see and the show provided a great platform to promote our brand and have the opportunity to display our full range of products,” Hill concluded.

Add More Power to Your 2017 Hyundai Elantra Sport with a K&N Air Intake System

Since 1990, over 10 million people have ditched their bus pass in favor of a Hyundai Elantra. It wasn't very exciting to drive or look at. But it offered the sort of motoring practicality that your grandmother would approve of. Mercifully, the 2017 Hyundai Elantra has been completely redesigned, and is now much larger, and nicer then it used to be. To compete with other sporty compacts like the Honda Civic Sport and Volkswagen Jetta GLI, a new model dubbed the 2017 Hyundai Elantra Sport was born. It received a more sporting interior/exterior, an independent rear suspension (the standard 2017 Elantra has a torsion-beam rear suspension), and the turbocharged Hyundai 1.6L engine that produces a stout 201-hp and 195 lb-ft. This little powerplant is happiest between 3000–6000 RPM, but low range torque and high rpm horsepower can suffer a bit. Fortunately, the K&N 69-5317TS Typhoon intake can add an estimated increase of 15.4 horsepower and 13.5 lb-ft. And it'll make that Hyundai 1.6T sound a whole lot sportier.

To understand how a K&N 69-5317TS Typhoon intake can improve the performance of your 2017 Hyundai Elantra Sport, let's first look at how a turbocharged engine works. As the motor runs, the exhaust gases coming out of the manifold are used to spin a turbine inside of the turbo. On the other side of that turbine is an air compressor, which takes the air coming in through the intake, and pressurizes it. This compresses the oxygen molecules so that more of them get injected into the cylinders, allowing the engine to create a lot more power, from a relatively small amount of fuel. However, the stock Elantra Sport air intake is full of restrictions that can reduce the volume of air reaching the cylinders, while simultaneously causing the air charge to heat up and lose oxygen content.

If you want to maximize the horsepower, torque, and efficiency of your 2017 Elantra Sport 1.6L Turbo GDI, then you have to reduce the airflow restrictions and lower the temperature of the air. To achieve this, the K&N 69-5317TS Typhoon cold air intake uses a much larger aluminum intake tube, which has wide-angle mandrel bent curves to reduce turbulence and smooth out the airflow. It also has integrated fittings for all of the factory sensors, allowing for a 90 minute average installation time, with no ECU reflash required. This low restriction intake tube is fed by an oversized K&N performance air filter, that is shielded from warm engine air by a self-sealing heat shield. Unlike the OE Hyundai 1.6L air filter, this high-flow K&N filter can flow a lot more air, while simultaneously filtering out more dirt. And, it won't have to be cleaned for up to 100,000 miles (depending on road conditions).

In order to verify the performance gains, we installed a K&N 69-5317TS Typhoon intake system on a 2017 Hyundai Elantra Sport 1.6L, and dyno testing showed the aforementioned estimated increase of 15.4 horsepower and 13.5 lb-ft. The additional airflow provided by this K&N cold air intake system will cause the extra torque to be delivered at lower RPMs, and the extra horsepower to come on as the revs increase. The throttle will also respond much faster, and the intake sound will be much better too.

K&N Calendar Model Karol Martin Glides Through the Modeling World En Pointe

Model Karol Martin trained in classical ballet for 15 years which has helped her modelling career

Modeling requires discipline. It is an art form. To be a model, a woman must be physically fit, but more than that, she must maintain a certain mental composure: sticking to a strict diet, having the will to train, and being organized enough to meet a hectic schedule. K&N model, Karol Martin, does all of these things. Her strength stems from a background in classical ballet. For 15 years, she danced. The grace she learned in the studio influences her still. Karol says, “Ballet influenced my entire life, not just modeling. It taught me dedication, structure, and elegance. While other kids were partying, I was training. My favorite memories were performing: the butterflies were always amazing.” She learned discipline in dance, and this has carried her into a successful career.

In her youth, Karol also played golf and ran track. Her whole life centered around fitness and competition. Being in these sports taught her time management skills and healthy eating habits. Karol confides, “I was a very busy kid, always training. I never grew up playing video games or eating junk food.” Even in adulthood, when she can buy crunchy, sugary snacks for herself, Karol avoids the decadence. When asked if she has a favorite treat, she responds, “I don't have any ‘treats.' In-N-Out or a big carne asada burrito would be my guilty pleasure, I guess. Never been a candy or soda person.” This diet allows Karol to maintain a model-like physique and perform her job to the best of her abilities. She also focuses on fitness, listing her hobbies as, “work, work, gym, and more work.”

This tiny dancer was born in San Diego, California. Spanish is her first language; she learned English in third grade. Karol went to Otay Ranch High School. From there, she attended Santa Barbara City College before transferring to San Diego State as a communications major. Her modeling career took off when she was just 20 years old. She was referred to an agency, and the rest is history. Karol has worked for numerous name brand companies like “Adidas, Reebok, Asics, Lululemon, Harley Davidson, Coors Light, and of course K&N.” She’s also worked in TV, appearing in Hit the Floor on VH1. Filming for this show is Karol’s favorite modeling memory: “Getting to shoot the TV show felt like I was in a dream. I always wanted to start modeling, and I can't believe my dreams became a reality.”

Karol models full-time, traveling back and forth between London and the United States. She is committed to her career and focused on building her brand. Modeling, though glamorous, can be a difficult profession. It requires high energy levels: there is lots of traveling and long hours on set. However, it’s like a cake walk for Karol. She is determined and disciplined. With her ballet background, she glides through the modeling world en pointe.
