K&N sponsored Payne says three pulls in two days only happens once year, but two wins and a third, and the fans cheering makes it all worthwhile.
Jonathon Payne, owner of team Major Payne Pulling, and his 2005 Ford Ranger with a 485 cubic inch big block Ford engine, recently pulled some overtime. On Friday, at an Illiana Pullers Association event at Hoopeston, Illinois, Payne took first place. Then, with very little time for celebration, he packed it up and drove to another Illiana sponsored event at Earl Park in Indiana, where on Saturday he competed twice, winning once and placing third in the other.
Major Payne Pulling has now won the Lucas Oil Pro Pulling League Pro Stock 4x4 points race for the second year in a row.
"It is very unusual to have three pulls in two days. It only happens once a year," commented Payne.
"Three pulls in a row, 240 miles away from home and my shop, means I need to anticipate and be prepared for any problems. Thankfully all I had to do is charge batteries, add fuel, and adjust the clutch. It's the tuck pulling fans cheering after the pull that really stands out in my mind, and that is what makes it worth the 240 miles drive."
To briefly recap, the sport of truck and tractor pulling is a contest of hi-performance vehicles "pulling" a weight transfer device, known as a "sled" on a purposely built course, or "the track." The track is normally 300 feet long, 30 feet wide and constructed of the most readily available dirt. The contestants in each class hook their vehicles to the sled to see whose vehicle can pull the sled the farthest.
"I have had what I consider a very successful pulling season, winning the Lucas Oil Pro Pulling League Pro Stock 4x4 points race for the second year in a row," says a humble, understated Payne. He has in fact won eight times, finished second five times, with six thirds, three fourths and one fifth place finish.
There are only two sanctioned pulls left this season, both with the Battle of the Bluegrass Pulling Series. The first is September 25th at Anderson County Park in Lawrenceburg Kentucky and the other on October 16th at Lincoln County Fairground in
Stanford, Kentucky.
Payne adds "I would like to thank K&N for their continuing support and sponsorship and for their high quality filters. I rely on K&N products in my daily driver, tow vehicle and my pulling truck every time I leave my house."
Balog's sixth IRA win of the year tasted even sweeter with his parents there to see it.
Regardless of how long you've been racing, and self-possessed you pretend to be, winning in front of your mom and dad is a particularly sweet deal.
Balog says this is his best year yet, nearly doubling his overall IRA wins in one season.
"The win at Superior Speedway, probably stands out the most this year, because my parents flew in from Alaska that weekend and to get a win for them was really neat. It was the first time my mom has seen me win a feature outside the state of Alaska."
Those were the comments from K&N sponsored, Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, racer Bill Balog. Balog and his B Squared Motorsports team recently traveled to northern Wisconsin for a weekend of action, first at Superior Speedway on Friday and then at Cedar Lake Speedway on Saturday.
On the last restart of the feature at Superior Speedway, Balog went to the high side of the track in turns one and two and began to pull away from the rest of the field. He went on to drive the last 11 laps flawlessly, and scored the IRA portion of the Northern Nationals. Balog now has six IRA feature wins thus far in 2010.
During Saturday's program at Cedar Lake, Balog was shooting to bring home yet another solid top-five finish. As the race wore on, he scuffled his way in to the top-five, and soon found himself battling with in the top-three. After two late cautions, Balog figured he might have had something left for the leaders, but in the end, had to settle for the number three spot. With this third place finish, Balog and the team now have 19 straight top-five feature finishes with the IRA.
"It feels really good," said Balog. "We have been able to keep our nose clean and out of trouble for most of the year, and it has been paying off as of late, now with our sixth win of the year. With those two finishes, we have also now not finished outside the top-five in IRA action since May 22nd."
"This year is stacking up to be my best year yet with the IRA, as I had seven career IRA wins prior to the start of this year, and to have six alone in 2010 is just a great feeling."
The B2 team currently sits in first place in the IRA point standings with a 215 point lead and with only five IRA shows remaining.
"We are planning on finishing out the year with the IRA and were gonna try to bring home that third Consecutive Championship," says a cautiously confident Balog.
"After the IRA season is over we may do a few other shows before we call it a year and start getting ready for 2011."
Balog thanked K&N for their continuing support, adding "Our K&N products are outstanding, we have yet to have any issues with the sprint air box, or the wrench on oil filters. These are the best products on the market today."
