Westerman missed winning the final in Fallon by a heart-stopping two-hundredths of a second, running a 7.634 ET on a 7.65 dial.
Undeniably - girls just wanna have fun. There are even those approaching that particular pursuit with extreme, electrified passion. Take Sonoma State University Alumni Melissa Westerman for example. When she isn't scorching dragstrips in her Pro-class Mustang, or her GirlPowerRacing.com dragster, you might find her in the dojo exercising her Taekwondo black belt, or excelling in any number of other sports.
Winning Saturday's race and getting runner-up on Sunday has Westerman Racing sitting atop the NorCal Top Comp Association points race.
When the Sonoma, California native isn't racing, or tracking all things fast and furious, she works full-time "shaping the taste of fine wine" at a company that produces barrel alternatives. And, if she isn't doing any of those things, she might be competing in tractor pulls. Yeah, we'll get back to that.
Westerman began drag racing in 1998, while she was still in high school. She went to the Summit ET finals three times, representing Infineon Raceway in Sonoma. After high school she stepped her Mustang up to the Pro-class for a few years, then moved to the Super Pro-class that she competes in today. In the 2009 she finished second in points in the Nor Cal Top Dragster Association. Westerman has managed to build a racing career, graduate from college with a degree in Business Administration, and is apparently having a ball the entire time.
Recently Westerman Racing traveled up to Top Gun Race way in Fallon, Nevada and she won Saturday's race. "We got paired up against the same car we were in the finals with last the Saturday before," remarked Westerman. "We dialed a 7.64 and ran a 7.647, it felt great to see that win light come on at the finish."
Westerman made it into the finals on Sunday too and ran a double break out. Unfortunately she broke out more than she wanted to, against her opponent who ran a 6.87 on a 6.88 dial.
"Unfortunately we didn't take home the finals win due to a double break out. We dialed a 7.65 elapsed time and broke out by running a 7.634, almost two-hundredths of a second off our dial. Our competition broke out by only one-hundredth of a second giving them the win. It all happened so fast at first it was hard to tell who crossed the line first. It was a good race weekend though, winning one race and runner up in the second. We were able to take the points lead in the NorCal Top Comp Association with only six races to go."
She also made a point of showing her appreciation for the continuing support she receives from K&N, saying "Westerman Racing has built a strong relationship with K&N on and off the track. The customer service and products at K&N are phenomenal and we continue to use and promote K&N products on our race cars as well as all our daily drivers. When the race schedule allows, we compete in California truck pulls with a Dodge Cummins that also uses K&N reusable filter products for air, oil, and crankcase."
"As stated before, I've started to do truck pulling with my boyfriend's Dodge Diesel," revealed Westerman. "So far I've pulled four times, winning three times, and breaking the truck three times. This past weekend we were at Redding Drag strip in Redding, California for the NHRDA truck pulls. At the end of our 301' pull (300' is a full pull) the rear spider gears broke, but we won in our class with second place pulling 276' and third was a 263' pull. The Redding event is the largest diesel truck pull on the west coast and had 12 trucks competing in our class. So even though we broke, coming out on top was a great feeling."
During Time Attack a vehicle needs to start off under full rolling start conditions into a warm up lap where they accelerate as fast as possible. The end of this lap is the start of their timed lap. Drivers are allocated 3 laps in a final event run; warm-up lap, timed lap and a cool-down lap. K&N Crew Chief Dave Martis talks about K&N's 504 horsepower Time Attack 2004 Infiniti G35. K&N Filters Infiniti G35 driver Paul Brown explains how he got started in the racing circuit.

For the new 2010, 2011 and 2012 Dodge Ram 2500 and 3500 models equipped with the 6.7L engine, K&N can help to increase performance with its new High-Flow Air Filter™ number E-0787. These heavy duty pickups are designed for the driver in need of serious hauling capacity and towing power, and the designers at K&N stayed true to this form when engineering this new cube filter design that both increases the filtration surface area and power.
Replacement Air Filter for 2010, 2011 and 2012 Dodge Ram 2500 / 3500 6.7L
K&N's expertly engineered air filters provide less air flow restriction than typical paper air filters, and this particular model E-0787 utilizes all available space inside the factory airbox which can increase the efficiency of the engine's performance and provide the highest quality levels of filtration.
"Like the models we designed for the 2010, 2011 and 2012 Dodge pickups, we designed the filter for heavy filtration and engine protection by incorporating 6 layers of our special filtration media instead of the standard 4 layers used in many of our filters." says Joost Adriaans, the project manager for this filter design. This design protects the engine while still allowing your engine to breathe easier which can give your truck gains in both horsepower and torque. Horsepower and torque come in handy during every day driving and especially when hauling extra weight or towing. The easy to install drop in design makes this K&N replacement air filter a simple and ecological performance upgrade even for the hardiest of vehicles like the 2010, 2011 and 2012 6.7L Dodge Rams.
K&N's High Flow Air Filters are made from specially made cotton media instead of paper, making this air filter the last one you will ever need. This filter never needs to be replaced. The E-0787 utilizes a unique cube shaped design to fill the available area within the 2500's and 3500's deep airbox compartment. The filter will require cleaning every 50,000 miles under normal highway driving conditions and it will provide outstanding engine protection for the life of your vehicle no matter what jobs you have in store for your heavy duty pickup, and since it never needs to be replaced, part number E-0787 will help to reduce waste.
K&N stock replacement air filters for street vehicles are covered by our famous K&N Million Mile Limited Warranty® and are guaranteed to last long after your paper filter would need to be changed.
