Sport Bike Drag Racer and Stunt Rider Karme Cannon Promotes Motorcycle Safety

Karme Cannon, sport bike drag racer and stunt rider, became interested in motorcycles because of her mother. "My mom had a Harley and I thought that was so cool," says Karme. Since then, Karme has become a celebrated female racer and stunt rider, as well as a spokesperson for women's issues.

She is a motorcycle safety advocate and a huge supporter of breast cancer awareness and autism awareness. "I have organized The CHAOS Ride for The Cure for the past 5 years, and I support this because I lost someone very close to my heart to breast cancer. I am also currently working on an autism charity ride."

Karme also spreads the word that women need to take their bikes very seriously. She teamed up with the president of WominX LLC in 2003 and helped start WominX.net, a website that caters to the riding lifestyle, as well as a motorcycle club, Loonatix & Loonachix in 2000 which now has chapters all over the country. "I have a reputation of being the chic always pushing that female passenger to learn to ride and buy their own bike. I mean, why ride on the back when you can ride your own?" says Karme. "Everyone needs to take the Motorcycle Safety Course and always wear your proper gear. I can't stand to see a woman wearing shorts, flip flops or a skirt on her bike just to get noticed. What are you going do if you fall off that bike? Wear the proper clothing and gear when you ride and guys will think you are hot just because you are riding your OWN bike, not because of what you are wearing on your bike."

Charities and causes aside, Karme's first love is riding. "My first bike was a '95 Suzuki Katana. I bought the bike and I had no clue on how to ride it. I took the safety course, which was the best thing I could've done and began to get more comfortable riding. After 9 months of riding that heavy Katana I upgraded to a Honda CBR F3 that was all chromed out." Karme started going to track days and decided to purchase a fully customized '99 Kawasaki ZX7R. "I raced this bike on the road track and drag strip. I really got into drag racing and I needed something faster, so I bought my 2000 Kawasaki ZX12R. I drag raced the 12 for about four years and retired her from racing to customize her. I stretched her out and added some fun things like K&N filters, nitrous, chrome and a custom paint job."

Karme now uses K&N products on all her bikes. "My bike runs so much better on the track & street. The bikes used to perform poorly in the heat but now my K&N motorcycle filters have helped out the performance tremendously. K&N dynamometer testing shows more than an 11% increase in peak power gain. An estimated 3.18 horsepower gain was measured at 35.6 mph. K&N’s air intake design has lower restriction than the factory system. The result is a power gain you can feel immediately along with excellent air filtration.

The 63-1121 air intake system replaces the stock airbox and intake track with an intake tube, an oversized airbox and a chrome top K&N air filter (RC-2960XD). The K&N air filter is washable and reusable. It is also pre-oiled and ready for installation.

A heat shield assembly is installed into the vehicle and secured with the provided hardware to the factory airbox mounting locations. The powder coated black heat shield isolates the K&N air filter from the engine compartment and allows it to receive a consistent flow of fresh air. A K&N DryCharger is also supplied for increased protection and longer service intervals in extreme dust or wet conditions. Fuel management modifications are not necessary to receive increased performance.

K&N air filters are made from cotton instead of paper and will never need to be replaced. They are washable and reusable and only require cleaning every fifty thousand miles under normal highway driving conditions.

Daytona SportBike Race One Series at Road Atlanta in the books for Rider Chaz Davies

The first top five-finish for the Factory Aprilia Millennium Technologies Team is in the record books. Rider Chaz Davies took fifth in the AMA Daytona SportBike Race One at Road Atlanta in Georgia.

Davies also finished in sixth place in Race Two. Team Rider Ben Thompson fought back from a difficult starting position to finish just outside the top ten in Race Two with an eleventh place finish on Sunday.

“There are new two-by-two rolling start procedures,” said Chip Spalding, Team Manager. “Qualifying is now the most important part of the weekend, because a good starting position is critical to get results in the two races.”

Davies was tenth in qualifying which meant he went first in the Superpole competition. Superpole takes the best times from the top ten riders and puts them in order for the start of the race. “Chaz ended up fourth on the grid,” said Spalding. “Ben qualified in seventeenth position.”

Davies got a great start in Daytona SportBike Race One and jumped into a six bike pack fighting for the lead. The red flag came out on lap nineteen and Davies went to fifth position.

“It was a good solid weekend,” said Davies. “It felt really good to run up front and I think with a few more advances with the bike we can win one of these races soon.”

Thompson had the speed and the skill to finish in the top ten but was hit from behind by another rider. Even though he was forced off the track, Thompson finished in the eleventh position.

“We made a lot of progress this weekend and we had a really good bike,” said Thompson. “We got caught up in a few incidents with other riders and that is disappointing. But, we had the pace to finish in the top ten and that is encouraging.”

The Aprilia RSV1000Rs are equipped with K&N air and oil filters. “We use K&N on everything we build,” said Spalding. “K&N protects our engines from track debris.”

Competition resumes in the AMA Daytona SportBike Series at Barber Motorsports Park May 1-3 in Birmingham, Alabama.
